The march in 1970 is and was one of the most precious moments in Newton Counties history. A lot of people black and white, celebrated Black Easter together. They would wear old clothing and make sure they did not spend any money on that day. They marched all through Covington's streets and roads all the there and then back to the church where the walk began, St. Paul AME Baptist Church. That year marked a turning point in the civil rights struggle in Newton County, as the black community held a boycott of segregated businesses, traveling to Decatur for groceries and basic goods, said community activist Forrest Sawyer Jr. There were numerous marches that year, culminating in the Black Easter March, which saw thousands of protesters gathered in the square. Leaders urged residents not to forget this critical part of the county's history. Twas this day, Black Easter is still celebrated by thousands and and more to come.
